Venäjän demokraattinen oppositio on hänen kanssaan täysin eri mieltä: "Just as open-minded Russians are fighting to expose our dark past, suddenly the Kremlin receives support from the free world in whitewashing the crimes and horrors of Stalin." (Garry Kasparov)
Mitä "uusi historiankirjoitus" voisi unohtaa meidän yhteisessä historiassamme?
Suomi on edelleen yksin.

"It was with surprise and dismay that I read about Finnish president Tarja Halonen's recent televised remarks regarding the Russian regime of Vladimir Putin and Dmitry Medvedev. On the eve of Putin's visit to Finland, President Halonen referred to both men as "legitimate rulers," even though they owe their positions to a decade of worsening repression. Such statements from western leaders do great damage to the fight for real democracy in Russia. Fraudulent elections in a police state do not create a legitimate government.
Hearing President Halonen praise the return of "Soviet patriotism" on the 70th anniversary of Josef Stalin's aggression against Finland is an additional cruel irony. President Medvedev's new commission on historical falsification will no doubt be pleased to receive support from such an unlikely quarter. Just as open-minded Russians are fighting to expose our dark past, suddenly the Kremlin receives support from the free world in whitewashing the crimes and horrors of Stalin.
I understand that bringing democracy to Russia is a fight for Russians. But the least the western powers can do is avoid aiding our corrupt dictatorship. If we are to speak of patriotism, I proudly represented the colors of my country for 25 years. The Putin regime does not represent the interests of Russia. It is the enemy of Russia, and its survival means the slow death of our state.
I can only hope that President Halonen's damaging remarks were only the symptoms of a temporary case of "gas poisoning." Energy and pipeline deals can be done without making a mockery of the many people who have been beaten, jailed, and killed in Putin's Russia while fighting for little more than basic human rights."
